The Health and Literacy Compendium was developed by World Education in collaboration with the National Institute for Literacy with a generous grant from Metropolitan Life Foundation. The document is designed to help literacy teachers find health information appropriate for classroom use and to share literacy information and easy-to-read health materials with health professionals. It includes over 80 citations to print and Web health materials. Materials included background reading on the links between health status and literacy status; materials on how to develop easy-to-read health education materials; curriculum, stories and fact books on a variety of health topics for adults with limited literacy skills; bibliographies and databases; and organizational resources. Many of the resources included are appropriate for multicultural audiences or in languages other than English. The Web version of the Compendium is searchable and includes direct links to many of the resources cited.
